Fuerteventura Car HireWhile Fuerteventura does have a good Bus Service, a Car is essential if you really want to get out of the resort and explore the Island, in fact a 4 x 4 is necessary to get to several of the most interesting places (although it is unlikely that your insurance will cover driving on dirt tracks).
To hire a car, you should be at least 21 years old and you should have your license for a minimum of two years. Driving licenses from any European Union country are accepted everywhere and most companies will accept licenses from the US, Canada etc., although licenses from certain countries will not be accepted.
The big Car Hire companies generally offer very big discounts for booking over the Internet in advance.
Driving is on the Right as in continental Europe and the roads are generally good on the main routes, although some extra care should be taken on Roads that have sand drifting across them (such as the main Corralejo - Puerto del Rosario road) as this can be hazardous.
Petrol is cheaper than in mainland Spain and it is a lot cheaper than in the UK. You may still find one or two Petrol Stations (Gasolineras) that do not accept Credit Cards, but most now do. If you are paying with Credit Card, make sure that you have your Passport with you as you will be asked for ID.
Some Car Rental companies (e.g. Avis) will allow you to take the Car to Lanzarote on the Ferry, normally if they have offices on both Islands, you should check first!
